Leading in a Global Organisation

Weir Plc

BACKGROUND:

Weir Plc employs more than 13,000 people in over 70 countries. With 140 years of engineering experience the organisation now has a global footprint and is a member of the Financial Times Top 100.  The company has grown significantly in recent years organically and through acquisition into new and existing markets. Their aim is to provide customers with a uniform response delivered on a global scale with leadership as one of their core values.

The Weir Group had identified leadership as a key component of its future success strategy and identified three key groups to develop: high potential leaders, business unit Managing Directors and Presidents and Senior Functional Directors. Over a seven year period VBL provided leadership development programmes for over 180 of these leaders. The objectives of the programme were to:

  • develop their personal leadership impact,
  • develop business leadership skills and capabilities,
  • understand how to  work effectively in a global organisation,
  • improve networking and cross divisional co-operation,
  • develop a talent pool of high potential leaders within Weir,
  • improve the leadership bench strength of the Weir Group in a time of significant expansion.

SOLUTION:

VBL created these leadership development programmes for multi-cultural groups of leaders. The programmes gave the leaders the opportunity to learn and network with colleagues from across the organisation and globe. Each were based on a number of residential experiential leadership development modules aimed at improving personal leadership impact and providing the skills for business leadership in a global organisation. The programme also included 360 degree feedback and executive coaching from VBL coach mentors.

OUTCOME:

  • Weir has a group of leaders well equipped to lead and manage in a growing global organisation.
  • 75% of the attendees have been promoted or now have significantly enhanced responsibility in the organisation.
  • Weir was able to increase its pool of “ready now” mobile leaders able to take up positions as they became available.
  • Enhanced motivation in this key group of leaders.
  • Increased connection amongst this group of leaders with Weir Group and its strategic aims and objectives.

“The Weir Group has 25 armed managers to bring the business to the next level. This course has had a huge effect on my life. The first module made me realise who I am and what is important to me. The second made me realise how I was going to make it happen.”
